Poetry

My heart’s gone cold
by Kekeletso Khena

Last night as I stood by the balcony,
The city’s skyline beautifully lit
A mellow glow of lights in a distance
The air is still except for a gentle breeze
The perfect setting to end of the day
Then it hit me

My heart’s gone cold
I felt its icy grip on my soul
Numbing my senses, frozen in fear
Unable to give of myself
I am held hostage by memories
of love gone wrong
Or was it even

Cause my heart’s gone cold
Like burning coal after a while
Covered in ashen dust
A fiery glimmer remains at the core
Reminiscent of passionate moments
I find comfort in solitude

I know my heart’s gone cold
Yet I yearn for love’s gentle caress
Genuine, senseless but real
A flicker of hope flashes by
Just maybe the other piece of my heart
burns with a mellow glow
As the beautiful as the skyline I saw last night
As I stood by the balcony
